Apparently you didn't take the time to read it. Racism was kind of a minor point here, he was also talking about Newt's glee in crapping on the poor and tapping into an ugly impulse to look down on and criticize people in rough situations because it makes some people feel better about themselves.

Also the person in the article you just failed to read was getting a paycheck. Finally, if you don't see that Newt Gingrich blows racist dog whistles like John Coltrane blew the saxophone, you're kind of a lost cause.

The thing is - Matt's mom DID have a job. She *was* working, and still needed food stamps to make ends meet. This is the fact of life for a great many Americans. So, when Gingrich says, "Paychecks not Food Stamps" - those 2 aren't mutually exclusive, they unfortunately go hand in hand. 2 adults with 2 kids can work full time, and at current minimum wage, they still qualify for food stamps. WORKING people are below the poverty line. With the rising costs of gas, utilities, rents, clothes, food, and so on, over the past few years, millions had the rug ripped out from under them and are doing whatever they can to survive and get through this.
I am *happy* that Obama is the "food stamp president"! Almost half of the food stamp recipients are KIDS! 1/3 are elderly and disabled folks! We're not letting kids STARVE during this economic cluster fuck!
Food stamps on average provide $4 per person per day. That's it. Anyone receiving food stamps or SNAP as it is now called is not getting one over on anyone, they are barely scraping by and going to bed hungry so their kids can eat.
(also Gingrich did say specifically say that "black Americans" should demand paychecks, not food stamps- not all Americans.)

I did in fact read Gingrich's full statements. As far as I'm concerned, he has zero interest in getting people back to work and every interest in removing the social safety net, as per Grover Norquist's orders.

If you don't think the mere mention of "food stamps" doesn't have racial undertones in most people's minds, you're kidding yourself. It's ugly but it's true, and Gingrich is fully aware of that. He doesn't choose his words idly.

I also think this post makes it fairly clear that I come from people who struggled very much with taking assistance from other people. I will put up my belief in hard work against anyone else's. Sometimes hard work isn't enough to survive, though. If more people are on food stamps now than ever before (and I don't have stats in front of me that say one thing or another), it's because we're suffering through the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

As for baggage, we've all got it.

You took all this time to write this, but not the time to even see what Gingrich actually said, right? If you take the mere mention of food stamps to mean that the person must be talking about BLACK PEOPLE, that makes you the racist.

During the Obama presidency more people have ended up on food stamps than ever before in American history. Gingrich says he'd like people to rather get paychecks (become employed at all) rather than subsist on food stamps. There are plenty of ways to criticize him for attributing this mire to Obama, but that you have a problem with the statement would astound me if I think you ever bothered to actually look into it or think critically about it.

But of course, you didn't. You just reacted because you don't like Gingrich (with good reason) and you clearly have a lot of baggage to deal with. Too bad.

Very good post, thank you. I had a similar upbringing (drunk dad, mom sewed clothes and dolls from home to make money). She told me once that she had to borrow a dollar from a neighbor to buy a loaf of bread so we could have toast for dinner. How anyone could direct their scorn at someone in that situation is the most depressing concept to me. I've said it before- it's not as if Matlock would seek out the person with the LEAST to gain as the suspect. The wrong folks are taking the blame here.
