If you don’t think the mere mention of “food stamps” doesn’t have racial undertones in most people’s minds, you’re kidding yourself. It’s ugly but it’s true, and Gingrich is fully aware of that. He doesn’t choose his words idly.

I also think this post makes it fairly clear that I come from people who struggled very much with taking assistance from other people. I will put up my belief in hard work against anyone else’s. Sometimes hard work isn’t enough to survive, though. If more people are on food stamps now than ever before (and I don’t have stats in front of me that say one thing or another), it’s because we’re suffering through the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

As for baggage, we’ve all got it.

During the Obama presidency more people have ended up on food stamps than ever before in American history. Gingrich says he’d like people to rather get paychecks (become employed at all) rather than subsist on food stamps. There are plenty of ways to criticize him for attributing this mire to Obama, but that you have a problem with the statement would astound me if I think you ever bothered to actually look into it or think critically about it.

But of course, you didn’t. You just reacted because you don’t like Gingrich (with good reason) and you clearly have a lot of baggage to deal with. Too bad.
