Holiday Horrors: John Galliano’s Christmas Tree

Continuing the fabled tradition begun all the way back in 2009, Scratchbomb presents Holiday Horrors and Holiday Triumphs: an advent calendar of some of the more hideous aspects of this most stressful time of year–with a few bits of awesomeness sprinkled in.

gallianoxmastree.jpgThis monstrosity to your right was installed in the Claridge Hotel in London last week. It’s supposed to be a take on the traditional Christmas tree designed by French fashion-person John Galliano. Isn’t your mind BLOWN, bro?!

I don’t know much about art, but I know what I hate. And this, I hate. I don’t hate this because it’s so “weird”, but because it’s so lazy. I don’t see anything that suggests “Christmas” at all. If you’re doing your “crazy” take on a Christmas tree, shouldn’t something about your work evoke Yuletide in some way? An ornament? A star? Anything? You could place this in the lobby of any building in Miami Beach in the middle of summer, and the effect would be largely the same.

Also, Mr. Galliano is the same designer who based an entire fashion show around homeless Parisians he spotted while jogging along the Seine. If there’s a better illustration of the clueless, out-of-touch artiste, please inform me.
